Since 9/11, we should all be more alert and “tuned in” to our every day surroundings. This is of particular importance in our office environment. You should report any suspicious person, activity or event you observe that is out of the ordinary or that makes you feel uncomfortable.
Always follow up on your intuition of something suspicious by reporting it. When you sense something suspicious, or what may be a criminal activity that is about to be or has been committed, do not hesitate to call someone. Stay on the line as long as required to make your report. If you are not sure if you should call, err on the side of caution and MAKE THAT CALL. How to Report
Have an office emergency procedure in place. All workplace telephones should be labeled with the department’s emergency and non-emergency numbers. When calling, identify yourself and your department. Give a precise location of the incident or complaint, and then state the nature of the problem and describe the situation briefly. Stay on the line to provide more comprehensive information when necessary. Remember - when reporting a crime or emergency, stay calm and act quickly.
What to Report
While it may not be a good idea to stare at an offender to formulate a description, you should try to get as good of a look as you can without endangering yourself. Be a good witness - your description should include each perpetrators’ sex, age, race, height, weight, body build, complexion, color of eyes, hair and clothing, and miscellaneous identifying marks such as tattoos, scars or other peculiarities. Also report the location and/or direction of exit or escape. If your personal safety is jeopardized, immediately relocate to a place of safety and protection. If confronted, avoid direct eye contact and remain calm.
