There are different types of individuals we locate for our clients—an old flame, an estate heir, a lost relative, an adoptee or birth parent, or a deadbeat dad. The most common individual that we locate, however, is a witness. This could be a witness for either the prosecution or defense in a criminal case, a witness to an accident, or it could even be your insured. For whatever reason, these persons are vital to the cases that are being presented before the court.
Many research tools are utilized in the investigation process, including confidential sources, on-line databases, skiptraces, phone number listings, driver’s license and vehicle registrations, archived newspaper articles and civil, criminal, traffic and property records. These are all great sources, but they are often inaccurate and are actually only leads as to where an individual may possibly be located. We have found that the best results employ a combination of database interpretation and actual fieldwork, such as visiting possible residences, interviewing neighbors, and making calls to relatives and associates. When required, we can perform these procedures discreetly using pretexts so as not to alarm the person being located. Once a witness has been located and the information is passed on to the client, efforts must be taken to immediately make contact and/or have the necessary subpoenas issued. Most often the individuals found are quite mobile and move around frequently, so an address or phone number obtained one week might be changed the next. CIA employs investigators who have the necessary experience to also conduct witness interviews and take recorded statements, evaluate a witness for court appearance and testimony, and more. Our only limitation for a successful witness locate and subsequent statement is the proper authorization.
