Trash or Treasure? Print E-mail
Written by Wayne R. Centanni

Trash or Treasure? Is it legal to dig through or pick up someone's trash?  Picking up someone else's trash could be a valuable asset in obtaining information about an individual. Everyday people throw away little bits of information about the way they live or how their company operates. Just think about what you throw in your trashcan everyday.

On May 16, 1988, the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed that there is no expectation of privacy, or ownership, once an item is left for garbage pickup. However, if the garbage is still on the owner's property, then by taking the garbage, it would be considered trespassing. The law is different when dealing with dumpsters. Check with your local police to be sure before making any trash pickup.
