Street Sense - On WheelsStaying safe on the street while driving requires vigilance and advance preparation.

With a recent rash of “smash and grab” robberies, where passenger car windows are smashed and purses and other items taken from the front seat while stopped at a traffic light, we must be vigilant in protecting ourselves. Place your purse and other valuables on the floor of the vehicle or in the trunk out of sight.

No matter how short of a distance you need to drive, while in your car all windows should be rolled up and doors locked. Drive in the center lane when possible. Keep your car in good running condition, and be sure your gas tank is at least 1/4 full at all times. Plan your route in advance– don’t get lost or look lost.

Precautions should be taken while stopped at a traffic light, especially at night. Pay close attention to your surroundings. Allow enough room between your car and the car in front of you to allow a quick escape if needed. Don’t be afraid to go through the stoplight if someone tries to force themselves into your vehicle. Better to get a ticket than get carjacked!

If you feel you are in an unsafe area and you get bumped from behind, do not get out of your car. Signal the other driver to follow you. Go to the nearest police or fire station or some other area of safety where there are other people.

Avoid parking in isolated areas and go to well-lit parking areas. Be especially alert in parking garages. From a distance, check your vehicle inside, outside and underneath before getting in. Have your keys ready in hand to unlock the door and get into your vehicle as quickly as possible. Immediately lock the doors, start the car and leave the area.

If you are pushed into your car try to escape out the other side and then move away from the car.

If you think someone is following you, don’t go home. Instead, drive to the nearest police or fire station, gas station or other business that is open where you can get help.

Remember - no property is more important than your life. If a gun is presented, the best thing to do is not resist, and just give it up.
