As painful as it may be, there are warning signs of an adulterous affair that need to be acknowledged. You may recognize a few, or you may even recognize most of the following possible signs of a cheating mate:

• Initially, the spouse is suddenly more attentive than usual (due to guilt). After the affair has been going on, the cheating spouse easily finds fault with their mate, to try to justify the affair in their mind. Will lose interest in their home life and their children, seems bored with life in general.

• Begins taking a stronger interest in their appearance, such as weight-loss, sun tanning, frequent bathing, new wardrobe, change in clothing style, change in hairstyle, gets nails done often; in general, “looking nicer.”

• There is considerably less intimacy in the relationship. Sex life is altered in one way or the other, in the form of a loss of sexual interest, or may make unusual sexual requests.

• Will begin to work late or go in to work extra early, when they seldom have in the past. May often have late night dinners with “customers.” Out of town business trips become more common.

• Becomes defensive if you mention infidelity or affairs. Will become overly offended and ask if you are checking up on them. May start an argument as an excuse to get out of the house. Will have frequent unexplainable absences.

• As a cell phone is the most common tool for communication with their lover, they will discontinue cell phone call itemization, and/or change the billing address. Rarely do they answer their cell phone, with calls being returned hours after a message is left. Excuses are made, such as a “bad battery.”

• Money becomes more of an issue in the relationship, as affairs can be expensive. Noticeable increase of ATM withdrawals. You may discover the opening of a new checking account. Credit card transactions found for unknown or unusual types of purchases. May charge up all credit accounts in preparation for ending the marriage.

• More and more mail sent to their business address. You may discover they got a post office box without telling you.

• There are an unusual amount of hang up or wrong number calls. When the cheating mate receives a phone call, they may whisper, go outside, and/or end the call abruptly. May even cancel Caller ID as a “way to save money.”

• Fragrances of colognes and/or perfumes other than their own are noticed on the clothing of a cheating spouse. Unexplained smell of cigarette smoke may also be on their clothing.

• The passenger seat in the car has been moved and is not in the usual position. Automobile mileage is not consistent with claims made by the cheating spouse.

• Computer activity may be increased, as an additional means of contact, such as IM. Computer passwords are changed. Secretive actions displayed, such as screen being minimized quickly when someone walks into the room.
